The Chicago Cubs continue to bring aboard former Boston Red Sox.
The Cubs claimed reliever Anthony Varvaro off waivers from the Red Sox, the Cubs announced Sunday before their game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The right-hander was designated for assignment by Boston earlier this week amid a series of roster moves.
The Red Sox acquired Varvaro in an offseason trade with the Atlanta Braves. The 30-year-old posted a 2.74 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 123 appearances spanning 128 innings the last two seasons with Atlanta.
Varvaro, who has a reputation of being tough on left-handed hitters, allowed five earned runs on 14 hits and six walks in nine appearances spanning 11 innings with Boston before his departure.
