Jim Kelly Weighs In On Deflategate: Tom Brady ‘Doesn’t Need To Do That’

Jim Kelly has no issues making assumptions when it comes to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Kelly recently became the latest former NFL star to weigh in on Deflategate, and he certainly sounds disappointed in Brady. According to Kelly’s logic, much of the controversy surrounding deflated footballs falls on Brady’s shoulders.

“I thought it would be better just two games, but they gave him four,” Kelly said in an interview on NFL Network. “The initial reaction after hearing so many people talk about it, it would be different if the balls were checked and he already had it how he liked it and then it went to the officials and they OK’d or they just said, ‘No way.’ But it was the after fact; that after it left Tom and then left the officials, it was supposed to go right to the field — (they) went back and took more air out of it.”

Kelly is clearly buying into the Wells Report’s claims that it was “more probable than not” that Brady knew the balls were being deflated. One of the Buffalo Bills legend’s biggest issues, he argues, is that Brady’s too good to resort to these sort of alleged antics.

“Tom Brady is a good friend, but he doesn’t need to do that,” Kelly continued. “He’s one of the greatest to ever play the game. So it was sad to see. When I saw the $1 million fine, the first- and (fourth-) round picks taken away, I was a little shocked.”

Kelly made it abundantly clear that he thought the suspension was a little much, but he does think two games fits the supposed crime a little better — especially considering the Patriots and Kelly’s beloved Bills square off in Week 2.

“Two games to me would be good because I think the Patriots play the Buffalo Bills in the second week of the season,” a laughing Kelly joked.

It’s probably worth noting at this point that Brady has a 23-3 career record versus the Bills (more wins than he has against any other team in the NFL). Brady’s 58 career touchdown passes against Buffalo are also 13 more than any other team in the league.
