Jockey Victor Espinoza earned his third career Kentucky Derby victory. He also won last year with California Chrome. It’s legendary trainer Bob Baffert’s first Derby win since 2002. He also trained Dortmund, who led most of the race.

California horses have won three of the last five Kentucky Derby races.

American Pharoah will be expected to compete in the Preakness Stakes, which is the second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978.
