Bob Baffert had a pretty good chance of winning the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago when two of the legendary trainer’s horses competed in the sport’s most prestigious race.

The favorite, American Pharoah, won the race with an impressive showing on the final stretch. Baffert’s other horse, Dortmund — named after the historic German soccer team — finished third.

Each of these horses will take part in Saturday’s running of the Preakness Stakes, a race that Baffert has won five times, most recently in 2010 with Lookin At Lucky.

Some trainers might be hesitant to have two of their horses run in the same race, especially when a Triple Crown pursuit is alive. But the sport benefits when the best horses are competing, and you won’t find many that are better than American Pharoah and Dortmund right now.

Despite drawing the No. 1 post position earlier in the week, American Pharoah still is the favorite to complete the second leg of the Triple Crown and bring incredible excitement into the Belmont Stakes.

“The secret was I came in here with the best horse, and so that’s why I won,” Baffert recently told ESPN. “Every time I’ve come in here with the best horse, I’ve won the race.

“I feel I have the best horse this year, so we’ll see what happens.”
