Lionel Messi might have outdone himself, and everyone else, this time.

Messi scored a sensational solo goal for Barcelona on Saturday in its 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) final.

The game was goal-less in the 20th minute when Messi gained possession on the right, dribbled through a quartet of defenders and beat goalkeeper Iago Herrerin with a fine finish to the near post.

Messi would add another goal (in the 74th minute) to take his tally to 58 in all competitions this season and seal the 23rd major trophy of his illustrious career.

Barcelona now has won the Copa del Rey 27 times.

Many rate Messi’s first goal against Athletic Bilbao among the best of his storied career. It hearkens back to the goal he scored against Getafe in April 2007.

Some compare Messi’s latest effort favorably to the stunning, game-winning solo goal Gareth Bale scored for Real Madrid against Barcelona in last season’s Copa del Rey final. Both involved dribbling nearly half the length of the field followed by a composed finish.
