BOSTON — Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval was removed from Tuesday night’s game in the bottom of the seventh inning after being hit by a pitch from Texas Rangers reliever Sam Freeman.

The pitch, a 94-mph fastball, appeared to make contact with Sandoval’s left knee, and the batter went down in a heap. He remained on the ground for several moments before being helped to the dugout by team personnel, including manager John Farrell.

Sandoval went 1-for-3 with a single before leaving the game. Brock Holt replaced him as a pinch runner.
