Not only will the soccer world watch the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar at a strange time, but studio broadcasts also could be set in the most unexpected of places.
Qatar’s World Cup officials are considering building an underwater broadcast studio, according to Arabaian Business. Reef Worlds, a U.S.-based company that focuses on building “sustainable underwater tourism sites” would carve the studio out of rock for around $30 million.
“The project we are in the process of designing for is an underwater broadcast center (and) is quite a real possibility,” Reef Worlds CEO Patric Douglas told Arabian Business. “They (Qatar’s World Cup officials) like the notion of doing the World Cup underwater with sharks swimming around.”
Officials will decide whether to proceed with the plan this summer.
Douglas also said broadcasters would have no problem paying for the project.
“You could underwrite the entire thing with one Sky or Latin broadcast network, they will pay you enough money to finance this thing,”
Authorities would convert the underwater broadcast studio into an aquarium after the 2022 World Cup.
