A struggling Justin Masterson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, the Boston Red Sox announced.
The move was made retroactive to Wednesday.
Masterson, 30, has gone 2-2 with a 6.37 ERA in seven starts this season for the Red Sox. He was roughed up for six runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings in his last start Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics, leading Boston manager John Farrell to speculate a DL stint could be likely.
Left-hander pitcher Robbie Ross Jr. was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Masterson’s spot on the 25-man roster. Ross has made 13 appearances for the big club this season, posting a 6.17 ERA in 11 2/3 innings of work.
