Seahawks Fan Starts GoFundMe Page To Help Team Re-Sign Russell Wilson

A new trend is giving NFL fans a unique way to waste their hard-earned money.

About two weeks ago, a New England Patriots fan set up a GoFundMe page to help pay the team’s $1 million fine for its role in Deflategate. The page has received over $16,000 in donations (that, for the record, won’t go toward paying the team’s fine).

Now, Seattle Seahawks fans are getting into the act, creating their own GoFundMe page in an attempt to raise money for the team to re-sign quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wilson still is on his rookie contract and will make just $1.5 million next season, a paltry sum for a QB who has led Seattle to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. The 26-year-old will be a free agent next year, though, and likely will have a very high asking price.

So, too, does this GoFundMe page, which hopes to raise $5 million to give to Wilson, or something.

Here’s the creator’s plan for what to do with the money, according to the page’s description:

“I have a strategic plan to get Russell money outside of the salary cap and get this money to Russell Wilson. I will be exploring setting up an LLC to effectively ‘sponsor’ Russell Wilson in the same manner that Bose or Gillette do. In doing so the 12’s will free up to $5M for the (Seahawks) to go out and get more talent.”

The page somehow has managed to raise over $1,300 so far, thanks in large part to one fan who plopped down $475. His reason: “We need to hang on to Russell Wilson!”

We’re all in favor of fans showing love to their favorite teams, but we’d suggest buying a jersey or tickets instead. Please.
