Shane Victorino will return to the baseball field Friday night.

The Boston Red Sox outfielder is expected to begin his rehab assignment with the Portland Sea Dogs as they kick off their weekend series against the New Britain Rock Cats at 6 p.m. ET at Hadlock Field.

Victorino last played in an MLB game on April 22, when he left the Red Sox’s contest against the Tampa Bay Rays with right hamstring tightness. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 25, retroactive to April 23.

The 34-year-old struggled to start the 2015 campaign, hitting just .143 with no homers and two RBIs through his first 12 games. He could change those stats relatively soon, however, as The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham said Victorino could join Boston’s big-league club as early as next week for the team’s three-game series against the Oakland Athletics.
