Will Ferrell crashed the “Late Show With David Letterman” on Monday night and did so with one of the best characters he’s ever done.

Ferrell made a surprise appearance, but he did so in character as former Chicago Cubs play-by-play man Harry Caray. During his time at “Saturday Night Live,” some of Ferrrell’s most memorable skits featured him impersonating the legendary broadcaster.

Letterman is in the stretch run of his career — his final show is scheduled for May 20 — and Ferrell’s drop-by appearance served as in impromptu farewell, as he name-checked Cubs greats like Mark Grace and Shawon Dunston. Also, as you might expect, it was hilarious.

Ferrell’s been a relatively frequent guest on Letterman as of late. After playing all nine positions in spring training games across Arizona, Ferrell appeared on “Letterman” dressed as a leprechaun where he also did his Caray impression.
