Belmont Stakes 2015: American Pharoah Wins First Triple Crown Since 1978

American Pharoah won the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes by several lengths, becoming the 12th horse to win the elusive Triple Crown and the first to win it since Affirmed completed the feat in 1978.

American Pharoah, the 3-5 favorite entering the race and running from the fifth post, defeated Frosted and Keen Ice. Pharoah led throughout the race, but pulled away in a dominant showing in the final quarter-mile to win in impressive fashion.

American Pharoah previously defeated Dortmund at the Kentucky Derby and Tale of Verve in the Preakness Stakes.

Trainer Bob Baffert won his first career Triple Crown. Saturday was his fourth attempt at a Triple Crown, extending his record. No other trainer has had more than two chances. Baffert-trained horses previously lost the final leg of the Crown at Belmont in 1997 (Silver Charm), 1998 (Real Quiet) and 2002 (Warm Emblem). His only previous victory at Belmont came with Point Given in 2001.

For jockey Victor Espinoza, he became the only jockey ever to have three chances at a Triple Crown. He previously finished eighth in 2002 with War Emblem and fourth last year with California Chrome. This is his first career Triple Crown victory.
