If you ask any major leaguer about his childhood, there’s a chance he’ll credit his father as a source of inspiration.

Baseball holds a special place in the hearts of many families given its status as America’s national pastime. Many family bonds and memories center on baseball, with some big leaguers fortunate enough to have followed in their father’s footsteps en route to a successful career on the diamond.

In 1903, Jack Doscher became the first son of a former MLB player to play in the major leagues. He followed in Herm Doscher’s footsteps and ultimately appeared in 27 games on baseball’s biggest stage.

Ken Griffey Jr. — a much more familiar name — made history after being called up to the Seattle Mariners in 1989. The future Hall of Famer joined forces with his father, Ken Griffey Sr., in 1990 to become the first father-son combo to play in the majors at the same time.

There have been plenty of classic father-son duos over the course of MLB’s illustrious history. There probably will be plenty more in the years to come. So with Father’s Day 2015 upon us, let’s look back at some of the all-time great father-son tandems to have graced the league with its family presence.
