Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez might move to Italy in order to find appreciation, recognition and playing time.
Inter Milan has offered to buy Hernandez from Manchester United for £8 million ($12.4 million), The Mirror reported Thursday. Manchester United hasn’t publicly responded to the Italian club’s offer, but The Mirror claims Inter Milan’s bid is short of the £10 million ($15 million) price the Red Devils have set for the Hernandez.
Hernandez spent last season on loan at Real Madrid, scoring nine goals in 33 games in all competition. He played a secondary role behind starter Karim Benzema, just as he did in previous campaigns at Manchester United.
Hernandez, 27, said in March he had hit “rock bottom,” having spent some of his peak years on the bench at leading clubs. But the Mexican marksman has no intention of abandoning his European career and playing for a team in MLS, Liga MX or elsewhere.
Mexico head coach Miguel Herrera said in April that Hernandez should play for a smaller but still important club. Inter Milan fits the bill as one of Italian soccer’s top clubs — although it has failed to meet its previously lofty standards in the last few seasons.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester United, Inter Milan and Hernandez can seal a transfer, or if another team — perhaps Spanish club Valencia — will move for Mexico’s leading attacker.
