Marco Estrada came oh-so-close to spinning a perfect game Wednesday. He would have had Josh Donaldson to thank.

The Toronto Blue Jays pitcher hadn’t allowed a single Tampa Bay Rays baserunner entering the eighth inning at Tropicana Field. In his attempt to change that, Rays outfielder David DeJesus lofted a soft pop-up toward the stands to the left of third base.

That’s when Donaldson put his body on the line to make one of the most incredible catches you’ll ever see.

With all due respect to Derek Jeter, Donaldson’s leaping grab makes the New York Yankees captain’s famous tumble into the stands look like a can of corn.

Ironically, the Blue Jays third baseman was involved in the end of Estrada’s perfect game, too. The very next batter, Logan Forsythe, hit a chopper to third base, which Donaldson snared with his bare hand before firing a rocket to first base.

It was another highlight-reel play, but Forsythe beat it out by a step to earn the Rays’ first hit. Can’t win ’em all, Josh.

UPDATE (4:30 p.m. ET): Estrada didn’t get the win, but his team finally did, vanquishing the Rays 1-0 in 12 innings. Chris Colabello’s solo homer was the difference.
