New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman and his dadLike many of us, athletes across the country took to social media Sunday to express their love for their fathers.

As many of these athletes display perfectly, Father’s Day isn’t just a 24-hour period for dads to relax and receive a gift or two. It’s about far more. Once a year on this day, we should celebrate our fathers and male role models for the accomplishments they’ve achieved and the profound impact they’ve had on our lives.

In sports, no matter how far an athlete gets in his or her career, it’s safe to say a dad played a significant role in the process somewhere. Sports and fathers go hand-in-hand, and the relationship truly is idiosyncratic and purposeful.

For many of today’s professional athletes, their accomplishments can be attributed to the role of their fathers. Success for these superstars likely wouldn’t have been possible without late nights in the batting cages, personal lessons on the course or long days at the slopes with their fathers.

So, along with these amazing athletes, we thank fathers everywhere for the impact they’ve had on our lives.
