Martin Skrtel has sparked fears he could be the next star player to leave Liverpool.

Skrtel has rejected Liverpool’s latest contract offer, calling the deal “unacceptable” Thursday, according to The Guardian and The Liverpool Echo. Skrtel revealed his contract impasse in an interview with Slovakian media outlet Aktualne, saying he wouldn’t agree to link his compensation to appearances.

“I am still waiting for the new contract,” Skrtel told Aktualne, according to the Guardian. “Sure. I think a contract like this is offered to players who are much older than me or to players who have had some health complications. But I feel good and not so old to sign this contract.

“Also, I think my health is OK. The contract offered is unacceptable for me. This is the reason why I didn’t sign it.”

Skrtel, 30, now will enter the final year of his current contract with his Liverpool future in doubt and a number of clubs interested in signing him.

“I still have a contract running with the club,” Skrtel said. “There was some speculation about interest from other clubs but that is not coming from me. Now I am with the national team and will be going on holiday after that.”

Skrtel has played for Liverpool since 2007. He’s the rock of Liverpool’s defense and popular among fans and teammates. Skrtel played 48 of Liverpool’s 58 games last season and was the only consistent performer on the Reds’ back line throughout the whole campaign. He indicated in April he wants to remain at Anfield.

Skrtel joins Raheem Sterling among Liverpool stars who have refused contract offers recently. Longtime captain Steven Gerrard will leave Liverpool for the Los Angeles Galaxy in July after 17-plus years in the Reds’ first team.
