Mookie Betts Exits Red Sox Game After Slamming Face-First Into Wall (Video)

Mookie Betts left the game, presumably to pick pieces of fence out of his teeth.

Betts exited Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park before the start of the third inning. The Boston Red Sox outfielder slammed face-first into the outfield wall while pursuing a fly ball in the second inning.

Betts initially stayed in the game following the collision. Red Sox manager John Farrell and the team’s trainer checked on Betts, but the 22-year-old indicated he was fine and even appeared to smile.

The impact must have caught up to Betts between innings, though, as Rusney Castillo shifted to center field and Alejandro De Aza entered the game in right field as the Red Sox took the field in the top of the third.

Betts hit a home run before leaving the game. He and Pablo Sandoval hit back-to-back homers as the Red Sox scored five runs on six hits in the first inning.

UPDATE (8:23 p.m. ET): Mookie Betts left the game with a low back sprain, according to the Red Sox.
