UPDATE (11:35 p.m. ET): Both players are considered day to day, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell. It’s unclear whether either will require a disabled list stint.

Original Story: The injury bug bit the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.

Third baseman Pablo Sandoval suffered a sprained left ankle and catcher Blake Swihart suffered a sprained left foot in the fifth inning of the Red Sox’s game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Sandoval landed awkwardly on his leg while making a throw across the diamond on a ground ball struck by Lorenzo Cain. Sandoval tried to tag Alcides Escobar at third base after fielding the baseball but failed. He then double pumped before unleashing an errant throw to first base.

Sandoval stayed down for a moment before returning to his feet. He walked off the field under his own power and was replaced at third base by Travis Shaw.

Swihart seemed to injure his foot while sliding into third base on a bang-bang play. He initially stayed in the game but was lifted for a pinch-hitter, Sandy Leon, in the sixth inning.
