Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron ‘Honored’ To Be Selke Trophy Finalist (Video)

Patrice Bergeron is the lone Boston Bruins representative at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas.

The veteran center is one of three finalists — along with Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar and Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews — for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, which is given annually to the league’s best defensive forward. Bergeron won the award last season and in 2011-12.

“It’s always a surprise to be nominated for any award,” Bergeron said in an interview on Tuesday’s edition of “NESN Live.” “You’re always very happy about that, and obviously it’s all about the help you get from your teammates. But I’m not surprised to see Jonathan and Anze again this year. They’re two amazing players, and I’m very honored to be nominated in the same category as them.”

Bergeron’s play was among the bright spots from Boston’s 2014-15 campaign, which ended without the Bruins playing playoff hockey for the first time since 2006-07.

“When your team doesn’t achieve what you go out for and not making the playoffs, it’s always hard to be happy with and satisfied with the way you’ve played,” Bergeron said. “It’s definitely a season that could have been better. It was up and down, but at the same time you have to learn from it. It would have been a lot better to be in the playoffs rather than being here for an individual award.”
