Report: Dan Connolly’s Future Uncertain; Retirement Could Be An Option

Dan Connolly doesn’t know where he’ll play football next season — if at all.

The offensive lineman is a free agent, and ESPN.com reported Sunday that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a push to sign the offensive lineman and reunite him with former New England Patriots teammate Logan Mankins. According to the ESPN.com report, Connolly was unwilling to move his family to Florida.

There’s still a chance Connolly will return to the Patriots, although ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss wrote “my sense is that the club hasn’t aggressively pursued that option at this time.” Reiss also “wouldn’t be surprised” if Connolly opts to retire.

If Connolly does retire, it would close the book on an eight-season career spent almost entirely in Foxboro (he played four games for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2005 after being signed as an undrafted free agent). The 32-year-old was a Patriots captain, appeared in 13 regular-season games last season and also played in all three playoff games while helping New England to a Super Bowl victory.
