UPDATE (3:30 p.m. ET): The Flames announced they have a deal with former Boston Bruins defenseman Dougie Hamilton, although they didn’t release terms.

ORIGINAL STORY: Dougie Hamilton and the Boston Bruins couldn’t come to terms on a contract extension. Just a few days after being traded, the defenseman signed an extension with his new club.
TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Tuesday afternoon that Hamilton and the Calgary Flames came to terms on a six-year contract extension worth “close to” $34.5 million. That means Hamilton’s annual salary-cap hit will come in around $5.75 million. According to Dreger, the Flames wanted to lock Hamilton in for eight years while the player wanted just five, so they settled in the middle.
The Flames acquired Hamilton from the Bruins on Friday ahead of the 2015 NHL Draft. Calgary sent Boston a first-round draft pick and two second-round picks, and the Bruins used all of them.
The Bruins tried to re-sign Hamilton, a restricted free agent, before dealing him but ultimately couldn’t agree to terms. General manager Don Sweeney told reporters at the draft that Boston made Hamilton “a very significant contract offer.”
The 22-year-old D-man figures to fit in very nicely on the Calgary blue line. Hamilton, the ninth overall selection in the 2011 NHL Draft, will be entering his fourth season in the league. He posted career highs in goals, assists and ice time last season, and was one of the Bruins’ most consistent blueliners.
