Report: Kings Want To Sign Rajon Rondo, Trade Rudy Gay For Cap Space

The highlight of Adrian Wojnarowski’s piece Tuesday for Yahoo! Sports was the apparently untenable relationship between Sacramento Kings star DeMarcus Cousins and coach George Karl, and Karl’s reported desire to ship Cousins out of town.

But also included in the article were several other interesting tidbits, including one Boston Celtics fans might enjoy.

According to Wojnarowski’s sources, the Kings “are pursuing trade scenarios for everyone on the roster, including talented forward Rudy Gay” in order to free up the salary cap space necessary to … sign Rajon Rondo?

Yes, the Kings apparently are enamored with the former Celtics and Dallas Mavericks point guard, whose fall from grace in this year’s NBA playoffs was as swift as it was bizarre. Rondo reportedly shares that interest and is “intrigued with the idea of a potential one-year deal in Sacramento that could help to rebuild his league-wide value,” per Wojnarowski’s sources.

While a return to All-Star form isn’t out of the question for the 29-year-old Rondo, his brief tenure in Dallas was a disaster. He averaged 9.3 points, 6.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game following his December trade from Boston, and after multiple run-ins with coach Rick Carlisle, a phantom “back injury” sidelined him for the final two games of the Mavs’ first-round playoff exit.

Rondo is set to hit free agency July 1.
