The Boston Red Sox outfield just got a little more crowded.
The Red Sox acquired outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations, according to multiple reports. FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal broke the story.
De Aza was designated for assignment by the Orioles on May 27 after a slow start to the season and in order to make room for the returning Ryan Flaherty. The 31-year-old struggled in 30 games this season, hitting just .214 with 34 strikeouts in only 103 at-bats.
However, if De Aza is able to regain the form he displayed at times last season and earlier in his career, he could be a nice addition for the Red Sox. De Aza is a .265 lifetime hitter, who enjoyed his best seasons as a member of the Chicago White Sox. From 2011 through 2013, De Aza hit .278 with a .764 OPS for the White Sox, averaging 10 home runs, 45 RBIs and 19 stolen bases per season, which includes just 54 games in 2011.
