Steven Matz made history Sunday in his major league debut for the New York Mets.

The left-hander, who’s the latest in a long line of young Mets starters to make his impact on the big club, pitched very well in his debut. Matz went 7 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out six.

However, when anyone thinks of Matz’s debut, they won’t remember what he did on the mound. They’ll remember what he did at the plate, where he went 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Matz’s four runs driven in are the most ever by a pitcher making his major league debut. Not only that, the four RBIs were the most by a Mets player making their debut — at any position.

It all made for a wonderful day at the ballpark not only for Matz but his family. Matz was able to play in front of his parents and, luckily for everyone watching, his grandfather also was there. Gramps stole the show with his priceless reactions to his grandson’s debut, especially this reaction to Matz’s late RBI single that had the old man swearing.

matzJust as good was Gramps’ reaction to Matz’s first at-bat in which he smoked an RBI double to the gap.

Awesome stuff.
