All 30 NBA teams have the same goal on draft night: Find the next
Darko Milicic LeBron James.
As you’d imagine, accomplishing this feat is easier said than done. In basketball, where one player singlehandedly can change a franchise’s fortunes, selecting the right player at the top of the draft is paramount.
This year, that responsibility belongs to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday night’s NBA draft. Kentucky center Willie Cauley-Stein projects as the best player in most mock drafts, but the likes of D’Angelo Russell and Jahlil Okafor aren’t too far behind.
Will these three and the rest of their NBA prospect counterparts all live up to the hype? Judging by past history, probably not. From the Portland Trail Blazers’ infamous decision to take Sam Bowie over a certain Michael Jordan to the Detroit Pistons selecting Darko Milicic over Carmelo Anthony, chances are at least one team will make a selection it will regret Thursday night.
We can’t see into the future, but we can dissect the past, so click below to see who made the worst screwups on draft night.
