Austin Dillon Survives Horrific Crash On Final Lap At Daytona (Video)

It was a long, long wait, but “The Big One” reared its ugly head at Daytona on Monday morning.

Torrential Florida rainfall postponed the start of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona, with the race finally getting underway just before midnight on the East Coast. Dale Earnhardt Jr. eventually won the race following a heart-pounding final, but it’s what happened as cars crossed the start-finish line that will have everyone talking.

In the middle of everything was Austin Dillon and the No. 3 car. As the cars got bunched up heading to the finish, things got ugly. As the wreck began, Dillon’s car went sideways and flying into the catch-fence. Other cars went spilling all over the track.

The focus quickly turned to Dillon, with Earnhardt’s pit crew — which had come over the wall to celebrate the win — came running onto the track to check on Dillon. Miraculously, Dillon survived the horrible crash.

“We were unfortunate but fortunate in the fact that the good Lord was looking at me and keeping me safe,” Dillon told reporters after the race, per ESPN’s Marty Smith. “I’m praying for all the fans out there. I’m hoping everybody is OK in the stands. The safety that NASCAR has done for the race car is obviously pretty awesome. I’ve got a bruised tailbone and a little bit of a bruise to my forearm, but everything else feels fine. I don’t have a headache or anything like that, but ice up and go get ready for Kentucky.”
