With the Boston Red Sox last in the American League East, the focus is turning toward next season.
The Red Sox made one trade before the MLB non-waiver trade deadline Friday — a deal with the Oakland Athletics for Ryan Cook — but that was it.
So Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington says he is looking into all options to build the best possible team before the start of next season.
“We really went into the trade deadline feeling like, all right, we have a good idea of what we need to do between now and next Opening Day to build a good team,” Cherington said on “Red Sox Gameday Live” before Friday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays. “If we can find deals that move us toward that, we’ll pursue them up to a limit. And if we can’t find those we have to be patient and get into the offseason.”
