Blue Jays’ Matt Boyd Can’t Record Out In Red Sox’s Monster First Inning

Matt Boyd probably wishes he stayed in bed.

The Toronto Blue Jays starter failed to record a single out Thursday as the Boston Red Sox jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning of the teams’ series finale at Rogers Centre. Boyd was charged with seven earned runs on six hits, a walk and a wild pitch.

The Red Sox opened the game with six consecutive hits against Boyd. David Ortiz and Hanley Ramirez crushed back-to-back home runs against the 24-year-old left-hander.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons yanked Boyd after the young southpaw uncorked a wild pitch and walked Mike Napoli, setting up runners at first and second with no outs for Alejandro De Aza. De Aza greeted the new pitcher, Liam Hendriks, with a two-run triple into the left-center field gap.

The Red Sox’s eight runs in the first inning marked their highest single-inning total this season. Boston had scored more than eight runs in a game just four times all season entering Thursday.

The Blue Jays jumped all over Red Sox starter Rick Porcello in the first inning Wednesday afternoon en route to an 11-2 win. Boston’s offense evidently wanted to even things out a bit.

The Sox tacked on four more runs and held on for a 12-6 win to complete a successful road trip.
