Early signs suggest James Milner is as good as advertised — at least, as far as Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is concerned.

Rodgers said Monday that Milner’s presence improves both Liverpool’s attacking potency and defensive resolve, according to LFCTour.com. Rodgers praised the impact Milner has had on Liverpool during a press conference which followed the Reds 2-0 win over Adelaide United in Australia.

Milner scored Liverpool’s opener, making it consecutive preseason outings in which he has scored. Milner’s positive influence on Liverpool’s attack is undeniable, but his ability to help conduct and participate in the Reds’ high-pressure defensive system has impressed Rodgers as well.

“James has given us so much, his influence on the team is huge already on and off the field,” Rodgers said, according to LFCTour.com. “(He is) an outstanding footballer; as you see, his tactical idea of how to press the game is very good. Players like him and (fellow summer signing) Nathaniel Clyne, who was outstanding tonight as well. James has shown why we brought him to the club, his energy, his quality and his ability to score a goal.

“He has got another goal tonight and gone close a couple of times. He’s an outstanding player.”

Milner, 29, joined Liverpool from Manchester City as a free agent earlier this month. Milner’s vast experience, all-around ability and resume caused Liverpool to greet his arrival with high expectations. Many expect the England international midfielder to help soften the blow Steven Gerrard’s departure represents.

Milner is less than a month into his Liverpool career but he seems to be meeting them, judging by Rodgers’ and teammate Adam Lallana’s assessment of his first few weeks at the club.
