MONTREAL — The Montreal Impact says it has signed former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

The Impact confirmed the signing Monday following a trade with the Chicago Fire, which initially had completed a move for the 37-year-old forward.

Drogba joins the MLS club following his second spell at Chelsea, where he won the Premier League title last season.

“It’s an honor to welcome Didier Drogba to the Impact,” club president Joey Saputo said.

The Chicago club traded Drogba’s rights to the Impact for an undisclosed fee.

“We are very excited and thrilled to add to our roster a player with an exceptional career,” added technical director Adam Braz.

Drogba won four Premier League titles in total and scored the winning penalty kick as Chelsea won its first ever UEFA Champions League crown in 2012.

Drogba joins the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard among former Premier League stars who have joined MLS teams this summer.
