Holes-In-One At PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic Mean $100 In Fans’ Pockets

Golf fans sitting around the 18th hole at this weekend’s Greenbrier Classic have plenty of reason to root for every single golfer in the field.

The PGA Tour is at the Greenbrier Sporting Club in White Sulphur Springs, W.V., where one of the best fan giveaways in all of sports is underway. The gist of the giveaway is simple: If a golfer hits a hole-in-one at any point during the tournament, fans at the par-3 18th hole are given $100.

Judging by photos on the tournament’s website, someone walks around the 18th green handing out $100 bills out of a bag. It’s really that simple.

Not only that, there’s a chance for fans to win even more money. A second hole-in-one means $500 per person, and if there’s a third ace, fans will be given $1,000. Not bad, not bad at all.

It didn’t take long for the ATM machine to be fired up, either. George McNeill aced the 18th in the first round Thursday, meaning crisp Benjamins for everyone.

It happened last year, too. Bud Cauley found the bottom of the cup on his tee shot, much to the delight of the fans.

“As Cauley plucked the ball out of the cup, course security guards roped off the grandstands and prepared to pay the lucky viewers,” Allan Taylor wrote last July for WVMetroNews.com.

Of course, for every hole-in-one, there are countless near-misses. Just ask anyone sitting at the 18th on Saturday last year when Oliver Goss came *this close* to putting money in their pockets.
