Bears actually don’t go to the bathroom in the woods. The Pope isn’t Catholic. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay hasn’t spoken to Roger Goodell about Deflategate since January.
Two of those statements are false, and one of them is something Irsay claims to be true. Sorry, Jimbo, but we’re not buying it.
An ESPN report named Irsay and Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti among the “small handful of influential owners” pressuring NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to uphold New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s four-game suspension. Irsay’s Colts were on the other end of New England’s 45-7 AFC Championship Game drubbing that spawned Deflategate, and Bisciotti’s Ravens lost to the Patriots in the previous game.
Bisciotti on Sunday denied placing any pressure on Roger Goodell, but Irsay took things one step further.
“That’s not true at all,” Irsay told The Indianapolis Star on Monday. “I haven’t talked to Roger Goodell about Deflategate since late January. Not true. That’s not the way things work involving someone else’s business and someone else’s team. It’s not something I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been around ownership (in the NFL) for half a century.”
Of course, Irsay is infamous for pressuring commissioners past and present to change rules that benefit his team. He’s also the guy who claimed he had $29,000 in cash while driving under the influence of narcotics because he’s “generous.” So it’s more probable than not that his claims of not talking to Goodell about Deflategate either before or after both the Wells Report or Brady’s appeal is just as egregious as the “we didn’t win anything” banner he raised to the rafters to commemorate that 38-point championship game loss.
Then again, when a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, it doesn’t actually make a sound. So maybe Irsay is telling the truth on this one.
