MLB Trade Rumors Roundup: Cole Hamels Latest; Yasiel Puig On Market?

The Major League Baseball trade deadline doesn’t officially pass until Friday afternoon, but apparently teams aren’t in the waiting mood.

There’s already been a flurry of big names on the move as “deadline day” has morphed into “deadline week.” Things got started in earnest over the weekend when the Cincinnati Reds sent Johnny Cueto to the Kansas City Royals. Then, the Toronto Blue Jays made a splash late Monday night in acquiring shortstop Troy Tulowitzki from the Colorado Rockies.

Tuesday’s already seen plenty of news and rumors, so let’s get caught up on all of those, shall we?

Cole Hamels: The Philadelphia Phillies left-hander put an emphatic stamp on what many expect to be the end of his Phillies career over the weekend with a no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs. He’s obviously getting plenty of trade interest, as multiple reports indicated the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers were the favorites to swing a deal for the southpaw. However, the San Francisco Giants might get in on the fun, too, as FOX Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal reported Monday morning. The Houston Astros are also making a “big push,” per ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick. ESPN.com reported the Phillies are looking for teams’ “best” offers by Wednesday so they can sort those out before Friday’s deadline.

Yasiel Puig: The Dodgers figure to be busy again at the deadline, and that could involve moving outfielder Yasiel Puig. According to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale, the Dodgers have let teams know they’re willing to listen on the outfielder. As Nightengale also points out, however, teams seem more interested in the Dodgers’ prospects. L.A. will be an interesting team to watch in Andrew Friedman’s first deadline at the helm.

Carlos Gonzalez: The Rockies appear to be in full sell mode now. They obviously sent a franchise cornerstone, Tulowitzki, packing, and now they could be ready to unload outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. An interested general manager told CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman the Rockies “expect to move” Gonzalez. Heyman hypothesizes the Mets, Angels and Orioles all could be interested.

Toronto Blue Jays: Almost as soon as the Blue Jays acquired Tulowitzki, many were quick to point out Toronto’s biggest issue remains its need for starting pitching. FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi hears the Jays are also looking to add starting pitching, and San Diego’s Ian Kennedy might be a name they target.
