BOSTON — Mookie Betts tried his best to set the tempo Friday night at Fenway Park.

Betts made an excellent diving catch in the first inning of the Boston Red Sox’s series opener against the New York Yankees. He robbed Yankees leadoff hitter and former Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury of a base hit by completely laying out in shallow center field.

This isn’t the first time Betts has robbed Ellsbury. The 22-year-old took an extra-base hit away from Ellsbury in the eighth inning of game Aug. 1, 2014, by way of a leaping catch on the warning track in center field at Fenway.

It’s an interesting way to treat your predecessor. And one the Red Sox surely will take.
