The NFL Players Association joined Don Yee in delivering a visceral response to Roger Goodell’s decision to uphold Tom Brady’s four-game Deflategate suspension.
The NFLPA issued a statement Tuesday in which it called the NFL commissioner’s ruling “outrageous” and confirmed it will appeal the suspension on Brady’s behalf.
“The fact that the NFL would resort to basing a suspension on a smoke screen of irrelevant text messages instead of admitting that they have all of the phone records they asked for is a new low, even for them, but it does nothing to correct their errors,” the NFLPA said in its statement.
NFLPA spokesman George Atallah also called “rubbish” an NFL Media report that the union and the league were close to agreeing on a one-game suspension for Brady. According to the report, Brady wanted the record sealed in the settlement, but the NFL disagreed.
Yee, Brady’s agent, contended in an earlier statement that “neither Tom nor the Patriots did anything wrong.” The Patriots also released a statement in which they said they “cannot comprehend the league’s position in this matter” and “continue to unequivocally believe in and support Tom Brady.”
