BOSTON — What better way to conclude Pedro Martinez’s number retirement ceremony than with a pitch to the man who caught so many of Pedro’s over the years.

During his speech Tuesday to the packed crowd at Fenway Park, the newly enshrined Hall of Famer called his former catcher, Jason Varitek, to join him on the field.

“Come here, Captain,” Martinez said to his old Boston Red Sox battery mate. “This is your moment, too.”

Varitek apparently was not supposed to leave the dugout until later in the proceedings — he hung around a bit before setting up behind the plate — but that mattered little to the man of the hour.

“Hey, this is Pedro,” Martinez smiled. “This is my parade.”

Indeed it was.
