Phil Mickelson’s dazzling final round Monday at the British Open came to a disastrous end.

Sitting at 10 under and trailing the leaders by just two strokes, the wheels fell off for Mickelson on No. 17 when his tee shot sailed far, far right — so far that it left the course altogether and landed on a balcony of the adjacent hotel.

To quote ESPN commentator Scott Van Pelt, “That’s a tough lie.”

Mickelson went on to triple-bogey the hole, spoiling any chance he had of hoisting the Claret Jug. He notched a 3-under 69 on Monday to finish 7 under for the tournament.
