Even if Ray Allen doesn’t play another NBA game, he’ll leave behind quite the legacy. And it’s looking more likely by the minute that the sharpshooter might be hanging them up.
Allen, who just celebrated his 40th birthday, was honored at the first-ever National Basketball Players Association Awards this weekend with the players union’s Man of the Year award. All awards were voted on solely by the players, and given his charity work off the court, Allen is an obvious choice.
But is the former Boston Celtic done contributing on the court? A throwaway line near the end of his acceptance speech, which aired on BET on Tuesday night, suggests it’s very possible.
“As we all — you all — move throughout your years, your careers, just know that somebody’s always watching.” Allen said. “… So be a great example, because you guys are leading the future generation in this country.”
Allen said he’d have to “re-assess” this summer whether he wants to return to the NBA after sitting out last season. But those sage words of advice don’t exactly sound like they’re coming from a current player eager to get back on the court.
