The Boston Red Sox will get another chance to gain ground in the American League East standings when they battle the New York Yankees on Friday in the opener of a crucial three-game series as -120 moneyline favorites at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Winners of four straight and eight of its last 10, Boston enters Friday night’s Yankees vs. Red Sox betting matchup at Fenway Park as one of the hottest teams in the major leagues, but still in the basement in the division and trailing first-place New York by 5 1/2 games.
After taking two of three from the Houston Astros last weekend, the Red Sox have enjoyed two days off over the past four days while padding their current win streak with a sweep of Miami in a two-game mini-series, outscoring the Marlins by a 10-6 margin over the two contests in which they were heavily favored at the sportsbooks.
Boston meets a Yankees club that is riding high following a pair of wins over the Oakland A’s, which have moved it three games up on the second-place Baltimore Orioles and 3 1/2 games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays, both of whom have struggled to find the win column during their current road trips.
This will be the Yankees’ second visit to Beantown this season following a three-game sweep of the Red Sox in early May. Overall, Boston has struggled against its archrivals of late, going 9-16 overall against the Yankees since the beginning of last season, and 3-9 in its last 12 at Fenway according to the OddsShark MLB Database.
A series sweep this weekend by the Red Sox, who were considered by many to be out of the hunt just two weeks ago, would shake up the AL East divisional race entering next week’s All-Star Break.
Boston’s strong play has already started to buoy its flagging World Series odds, which had tumbled to 33-1 following the team’s seven-game losing streak last month. Entering the weekend, the Red Sox have rebounded to 25/1 on those MLB futures, alongside the Blue Jays but still well back of the Yankees’ strong 16-1 odds.
Following their sweep this week of the rapidly fading Tampa Bay Rays, the Kansas City Royals find themselves perched atop the World Series betting odds at 6-1. The Royals’ cross-state rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, remain close behind, deadlocked with the Washington Nationals at 15-2, while the Los Angeles Dodgers have slipped to 8-1.
