Joe Kelly’s task Saturday afternoon will be to keep the Boston Red Sox’s positive momentum alive following two straight victories. But if he is to do that, he needs to pitch better than his last two outings.
Kelly is coming off a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox in which he lasted 3 1/3 innings. He is 2-6 on the season with a 5.94 ERA.
“I’d get him to challenge more hitters,” NESN’s Steve Lyons said of Kelly on “Red Sox Final” after the Red Sox’s 7-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. “I think I’d get him to throw more inside a little bit more often to kind of exert his dominance on the inside part of the plate and let guys know, ‘Hey, this is my side of the plate. I throw 98 so go ahead and lean into one if you want.’ And then work the secondary pitches away from hitters.
“He’s got to throw the ball more over the plate. he hasn’t been very consistent doing that — 100 pitches through five (innings) almost every time he goes out.”
