Report: Patriots Showing Interest In Former Colts Wideout Reggie Wayne

A number of NFL contenders reportedly are interested in former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne.

Dave Furst of WRTV-TV in Indianapolis listed the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens as teams that are interested in the free agent’s services. Furst also reported the Denver Broncos “have backed off” their pursuit of Wayne.

Other outlets later contradicted portions of Furst’s report, however, saying the Texans and Ravens are not, in fact, in on the 36-year-old.

The Patriots’ reported interest in Wayne is not particularly surprising given Bill Belichick’s history of signing aging receivers. Wayne’s best days are behind him — he has failed to top 800 receiving yards in each of the last two seasons after surpassing 1,000 in seven of his previous eight — but he’d still bring experience and leadership to a team in what likely will be his final NFL season.

Wayne, who has spent his entire 14-year career with the Colts, is the NFL’s active leader in receptions (1,070) and receiving yards (14,345), and he ranks third in touchdown catches (82) behind Antonio Gates and Larry Fitzgerald.

Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell and Danny Amendola were the only Patriots wideouts to catch more than 25 passes last season.
