Team USA Raises Trophy, Celebrates World Cup Victory Over Japan (Photos)

Team USA took home its third World Cup championship Sunday with a 5-2 victory over Japan, the program’s first title since 1999.

Of course, no title comes without its celebration, which the U.S. Women’s National Team certainly earned. Let’s take a look at some of the photos.

When the final whistle blew, everyone basically dropped to their knees or ran around uncontrollably.

Abby Wambach, who hinted at retirement, had a blast with the American flag while soaking in the moment.

Then came the trophies.

Carli Lloyd won the Silver Boot Award as the second-highest scorer in the entire World Cup tournament. She actually tied for the lead in both goals and assists with Germany’s Celia Sasic, but because Sasic achieved those numbers in fewer minutes, she received the Golden Boot.

Team USA goalkeeper Hope Solo was awarded the Golden Glove Award for best goalkeeper in the World Cup. She and the U.S. defense tied the longest shutout streak in World Cup history after not allowing a goal for 540 minutes. Oddly enough, the goals that bookended the streak both came in the 27th minute — one in Team USA’s first game against Australia, the other in the 27th minute versus Japan in the final.

Lloyd took home some additional hardware, as she was awarded the Golden Ball Award as the tournament MVP. After her hat trick in the final — among other dramatic goals — the award certainly was well deserved. Lloyd was even suggested as the new face of the $10 bill and as President of the United States.
