The NFL announced Tuesday that the commissioner has upheld Tom Brady’s four-game suspension for his alleged role in Deflategate. The Patriots also were fined $1 million and lost a first-round draft pick in 2016 and fourth-rounder in 2017, but they didn’t appeal that punishment.
Brady’s suspension is one of the most controversial punishments in recent memory, but it certainly has company. From Goodell’s decision to suspend Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice just two games for assaulting his then-fiancée to the league coming down hard on New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton for Bountygate, the NFL has meted its fair share of controversial discipline.
With Brady set to miss the first quarter of the 2015 season (for now), let’s look at the NFL’s most controversial suspensions of all time.
