Win a championship, get a parade. That’s how things work.
The United States women’s national soccer team will be honored for its incredible 5-2 win over Japan in Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final with one of New York City’s highest honors: a ticker-tape parade Friday down the Canyon of Heroes — New York’s traditional parade route for championships.
New York City mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement Tuesday via Twitter.

Team USA will become the first women’s squad to receive a ticker-tape parade in New York in 55 years. The last woman to receive a parade was 1960 Olympic figure skating gold medalist Carol Heiss Jenkins, according to ProSoccerTalk.
With its impressive blowout win, Team USA earned an unprecedented third star, making the U.S. the first country ever to win three Women’s World Cup titles. The game also set TV-viewing records and pulled in a better rating than Game 7 of the 2014 World Series.
