Wayne Rooney: I’d ‘Think About’ Playing In MLS Following Man United Career

Wayne Rooney might play soccer one day in the United States but he’ll need permission from his wife and children before doing so.

Rooney told the Seattle Times on Wednesday he’d consider playing in Major League Soccer after his Manchester United career is over. Rooney is participating on his team’s preseason tour of America, and his MLS admission probably sent the hopes of some stateside fans into overdrive.

“I’m obviously concentrating on Manchester United,” Rooney said, according to the Seattle Times. “When that time comes, that’ll be something I’d think about. (I’ll) sit down with my wife and children and decide if it would be right for me.”

Rooney, 29, is one of the most popular and accomplished players in English soccer history. He currently captains Manchester United and sits third on the club’s list of all-time leading goal scorers. Rooney also captains England’s national team and is its second all-time leading goal scorer. Rooney has a good chance of becoming Manchester United and England’s top scorer during the 2015-16 season.

Rooney’s contract with Manchester United expires in 2019. It’s unlikely his performance will warrant his current massive salary by the end of the deal, and he might be looking for a new challenge or adventure in four years’ time.

Rooney would be England’s most famous export to MLS since David Beckham joined the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007, surpassing whatever media and marketing splash compatriots Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, who begin their MLS careers this month, make in the American top flight.

Let’s wait to hear Colleen Rooney’s (Wayne’s wife) response before we start dreaming and speculating.
