Andrew Ference has carved out a decent NHL career for himself — something that was never a guarantee, according to people who scouted him.
The Edmonton Oilers captain apparently always was sure of himself, as seen in the following letter he sent to Pittsburgh Penguins coach and general manager Craig Patrick in 1997.

That letter was just one of several he sent to each general manager in the league. It was pretty bold for a kid no one was interested in, but that’s probably why he’s a captain of an NHL team.
While the letter itself is pretty sweet, Ference’s John Hancock arguably is the coolest part of the whole thing. Unfortunately, it seems the signature didn’t have the same upward trajectory that his NHL career did.

Ference won a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011 before moving on to become captain of the Oilers following a second Stanley Cup Final appearance with Boston in 2013.
