Caroline Wozniacki: Media Should Move On From My Rory McIlroy Break-Up

Caroline Wozniacki has turned the page on her relationship with Rory McIlroy. She encourages everyone else to do the same.

Wozniacki and McIlroy were one of the sports world’s biggest power couples until the golfer broke off their engagement in May 2014 just days after they sent out wedding invitations. Wozniacki since has moved on from McIlroy — she’s rumored to be dating Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt — but the media can’t help but harp on the past, much to the tennis star’s dismay.

“I am so much further along in my life, and I’m so much happier now,” Wozniacki recently told the New York Post. “I don’t think there is a reason to go back. Obviously, that relationship taught me so much and made me the person I am today, but at this point, I am like, I’ve moved on, Rory has moved on, and I am ready for the media to move on.”

McIlroy broke up with Wozniacki during a 10-minute phone call. It ended a relationship that began in 2011 after the pair met at a boxing match in Germany. The news came as a shock to Wozniacki — “it’s like someone dies right in front of you,” she said of the breakup — but she faced the situation head on.

“At that point, I didn’t really have a choice (but to speak out), because obviously Rory made it really public from the start,” Wozniacki told the Post. “Everybody was asking me questions and expecting me to say something. I just thought it was more important for me to talk out loud once and get it over with.”

Woz’s attempt to “get it over with” obviously didn’t pan out. Such is life when two major celebrities date for a long time right in the public eye.
