FOXBORO, Mass. — New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is under the microscope at training camp, and he’s handled it well through the first three days of practices.

“Jimmy is continuing to improve,” Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola said. “He’s learning the ways of the NFL and he’s going to continue to learn forever, as long as he’s playing. He’s learning every day.”

Garoppolo’s role increased during Saturday’s practice at Gillette Stadium. He received reps with the first team for the first time at camp and didn’t turn the ball over once.

It’s still quite possible that the second-year quarterback begins the regular season as the starter when the Pittsburgh Steelers come to Foxboro on Sept. 10.

Tom Brady and the NFLPA have taken Deflategate to a Manhattan court and would like a resolution to come before Week 1. Brady was suspended four games by the NFL for his alleged role in Deflategate, and the ruling was upheld by commissioner Roger Goodell after an appeal.

These training camp practices give Garoppolo an opportunity to not only receive first-team reps, but also develop valuable chemistry with his teammates. Garoppolo threw only 27 passes last season, so there’s a lot of work to do in establishing a rapport with all of the receivers, running backs and offensive lineman.

“It’s very important,” Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman said Friday when asked about having chemistry with the quarterback.

“Regardless of who’s throwing to you, it’s always good to be out there and be able to catch balls from anyone. … Jimmy comes out here and he works his tail off trying to get better every day. I expect that from him, and he’s doing that.”
