Dustin Pedroia will spent the rest of August watching his Boston Red Sox teammates from the dugout.

Manager John Farrell told reporters Tuesday that he does not expect the injured second baseman — who has not played since July 22 as he recovers from a strained hamstring — to resume baseball activities until the final week of this month.

“There’s been more emphasis on just targeting the strength phase and building up his physical base,” Farrell said, via MLB.com, as his team prepared to open a series with the Miami Marlins. “I know we talked about Detroit being the target date for some baseball activity. With all the information that’s been gathered on (Pedroia) and everyone weighing in on him, there was a high level of comfort to send him back to Boston and focus solely on gaining some strength in that hamstring.”

Pedroia initially missed 16 games after injuring his hamstring running the bases June 24. His return to the lineup lasted just six games, however, during which he went 1-for-22 at the plate before landing back on the disabled list.

Despite the Red Sox being far out of playoff contention, Farrell said the hope still is for Pedroia to play again this season.

“I think it would be beneficial to everyone, particularly for (Pedroia),” Farrell said, via MLB.com. “Keeping in mind we don’t want to jeopardize anything, if he can go into the offseason knowing he got back on the field and feels like there’s no restrictions, that would be helpful to everyone.”

Pedroia has posted a .287/.348/.426 slash line with nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 75 games this season.
